A Good Night's Sleep May Be Closer Than You Think

Sleep Apnea is a common disorder that affects millions of men, women and children but is often undiagnosed. The word "apnea" means "without breath" and those with apnea literally stop breathing repeatedly during the night - sometimes for a minute or longer! This loss of oxygen can contribute to numerous overall health disorders such as headaches, high blood pressure, and impotency. Additionally, these individuals may suffer from excessive daytime sleepiness, depression, and loss of concentration.

There are three types of sleep apnea: central, mixed, and the most common, obstructive. People with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) have disrupted sleep and low blood oxygen levels. When OSA occurs, the tongue is sucked against the back of the throat. This blocks the upper airway and airflow stops. When the oxygen level in the brain becomes low enough, the sleeper partially awakens, the obstruction in the throat clears and the flow of air starts again, usually with a loud gasp.

Some patients have obstructions that are called Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS). In either case, the individuals suffer many of the same symptoms.

Diagnosis and Treatment

If you're experiencing several OSA symptoms, it's important to get a complete examination and accurate diagnosis.

We will take a medical history and utilize the cutting edge diagnostic technology of our i-CAT CT Scanner to discover any issues that might contribute to the problem. If we suspect a sleep disorder, you will be referred to a sleep clinic, which will monitor your nighttime sleep patterns through a special test called a polysomnography.

There are a variety of surgical and non-surgical treatments available depending on the severity of your OSA. After a thorough analysis we will recommend the best solution for you unique needs.

Non-surgical Treatments

  • Nasal C-PAP Machine - Delivers pressurized oxygen through a nasal mask to limit obstruction at night.
  • Klearway™ Oral Appliance - A small device (similar to an orthodontic retainer or an Athletic mouth guard), worn in the mouth during sleep, gently brings the lower jaw and tongue forward, preventing the soft throat tissues from collapsing and obstructing the airway.

Surgical Treatments

  • Pillar Procedure - Three tiny polyester implants are placed into the soft palate. Over time, the implants, together with the body's natural fibrotic response, add structural support to and stiffen the soft palate.
  • GBAT Procedure - The bone of the chin area of the lower jaw may be repositioned to increase the size of the airway. Performed in the hospital under general anesthesia and requires 1-day overnight stay.
